The Daily News is one of New York City’s leading multi-platform news publications, offering bold reporting and popular platforms. Its wide reach across print, digital, video and social media has made it a go-to source of news and opinion for millions of readers.
The News was launched in 1919 as the city’s first tabloid and quickly gained a reputation for hard-hitting reporting. The paper has a long history of breaking major stories, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and the attempted assassination of Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 2013.
Like its crosstown rival, the New York Post, the Daily News is a tabloid that often skews more towards bold headlines than calm facts. In recent years it has developed a liberal voice (partly in response to the conservative polemics of its crosstown rival) and occasionally takes on crusades that are probably not helping its reputation for objectivity.
By the early 21st century, even the most venerable newspaper had no easy time competing with the explosion of online news and other modern sources. But the emergence of Donald Trump and the massive public interest in his campaign gave the News a rare opportunity to re-establish itself amongst the city’s most-viewed media outlets. It did so by harking back to its roots, employing a more provocative style and tone, giving Republican senator Ted Cruz the middle finger via the Statue of Liberty’s hand and rehashing its most famous headline in the direction of the incoming President: “TRUMP TO WORLD: DROP DEAD”.

The Daily News was once the largest daily newspaper in the United States, with a circulation peak of over one million in 1975. Its iconic headquarters, located at 220 East 42nd Street near Second Avenue, were designed by architect John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood and are now a NYC landmark. The building was later renamed Manhattan West and is now the home of WPIX-TV. The News moved to its current location at 450 West 33rd Street in 1995.
