Daily News is an American morning newspaper. Founded in 1919 as the Illustrated Daily News by Joseph Medill Patterson, it was the first successful tabloid newspaper and attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime and scandal. It also featured lurid photographs and cartoons. In its heyday, it had the highest circulation of any daily newspaper in the United States. The paper was sold to Tronc in 2017.
The newspaper’s current affairs page covers a wide range of topics, including international relations, foreign policy, national security and more. The website’s editorial team offers insights and analysis on major political developments from around the world. The Daily News also features articles on economics, health and wellness, sports and more.
It is the second largest newspaper in the United States. The newspaper’s headquarters at 450 West 33rd Street straddles the railroad tracks that lead into Pennsylvania Station in New York City. The News was once a pioneer in photography; it was one of the first to use the Associated Press wire photo service and built up a large staff of photographers.
On the political front, it has a long history of supporting Democratic candidates. It was a founding publisher of the New Deal for America party and supported Franklin D. Roosevelt in his presidential bids, including the 1936 campaign. It also endorsed John F. Kennedy in 1960. The newspaper has been criticized for its lack of objectivity. In the 1920s, it favored political wrongdoing and social intrigue, such as the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to her abdication.
In addition, the newspaper publishes a variety of opinion columns and advice pieces. Its editorials are written primarily by staff writers. In some cases, the newspaper includes guest columns by acclaimed authors or commentators. Its Sunday and weekday editorial pages are usually divided into several sections, covering various subject areas.
In the business section, the newspaper has an extensive coverage of mergers and acquisitions, as well as other financial news. The newspaper also provides analyses of key market trends and commentary on the economy. In addition, it has a dedicated section on the environment, with frequent updates on climate change and pollution.
The newspaper also regularly features content from a number of external sources, including the National Snow and Ice Data Center, the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, and NASA’s Earth Observatory and other science teams. Contributors include scientists Walt Meier, Ted Scambos, Mark Serreze, and Julienne Stroeve. In addition, a number of other scientists provide input for the site through guest contributions or interviews.
