The word entertainment carries with it the idea of diverting and amusing the mind, although in many cases it has a more serious purpose such as a ceremony, celebration, religious festival or satire. It also may have a social purpose such as a ball, party or banquet, or simply serve a function of a hospitable nature. Entertainments can be of a very small scale for an individual, such as choosing entertainment from an array of pre-recorded products; or they can be on an immense scale such as a theatrical performance or sporting event for a large crowd.
